Welcome

Welcome to the Internet's most comprehensive source of information about the benefits of yoga to runners and other athletes.

Yoga, meaning “union”, is the oldest known science of self development.  Hatha yoga is a system of exercise and focussed breathing used to achieve physical harmony and well being.  Traditionally Hatha yoga forms part of the path of Raja yoga, a complete way of living,  synchronizing physiological systems and ideally calming mental distractions through concentration and meditation, leading the practitioner towards unity with surroundings, a more peaceful mind and a sense of freedom.

For runners the main benefits of yoga may start with the asanas, or postures, which can correct muscle imbalances resulting from high impact training, conditioning the  muscular and skeletal system to prevent pain and injury.  Dynamic or astanga vinyasa ("Power") yoga can be used in preparing the cardiovascular system and muscles for peak performance, while gentle
yoga can be practiced to stretch out and rejuvenate after hard training and competition.   But aside from the physical aspects of yoga, breathing exercises, relaxation and self understanding can help train the mind for competition and to improve confidence and focus.
