Yoga and Pilates
for
 Runners

Welcome to the Internet's first website dedicated to sharing the benefits of Yoga and Pilates to runners and other athletes.

Yoga, meaning “union”, is the oldest known science of self development.  Hatha yoga is a system of exercise and breathing used to achieve physical harmony and well being.
For runners the main benefits of yoga may start with the asanas, or postures.  Whatever style you practice, Yoga improves circulation, concentration, strength and flexibility.  Dynamic or astanga vinyasa ("Power") yoga develops upper body and core strength and lower body and spinal flexiblity and can be used in preparing the cardiovascular system and muscles for peak performance.  More gentle yoga can be practiced to rejuvenate after hard training and competition.   But more than this, yoga  invites awareness and understanding of our minds, bodies and actions. Focus, visualization and self understanding can help train the mind for competition and to improve confidence and focus.

Pilates is an approach to exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th Century.  Pilates improves core strength, stability, posture and joint mobility. The method is particularly useful in injury rehabilitation.  The method corrects  inefficient movement patterns and muscle imbalances and provides a wonderful compliment to yoga, dance and all sports.
